Winning Mind-set: The 5 P’s are the Pillars of success:
Positivity – What does it mean: Don’t get swayed by outcome – your job is to make the best effort given your skills, knowledge-level and environmental circumstances, which can be out of your control. Focus on giving your best, at the moment/on the spot, whether you are taking a test or whether you are preparing for it. Another aspect of positivity is learning from instances of failure or shortcomings.
Perseverance/Persistence – What does it mean: Keep at it, no matter what. It may be boring, it may not give an immediate taste of success. But once you have made a considered decision to take a path, see where it leads.
Patience – What does it mean: Great things usually take a great amount of time to develop. Have the courage and positive attitude while you wait for that to happen. And think carefully before you act.
Practice – What does it mean: They say “practice makes perfect”. Not quite. Only perfect practice can make it perfect. Imperfect practice (i.e. casual, half-hearted or otherwise incorrect) can lead to failure. Have the wisdom (or take it from your teacher) of understanding what is perfect practice and adhere to it. Don’t just practice until you get it right; practice until you can’t get it wrong with repeated takes. Be greedy for more practice. And practice what/when your mind likes and even more so for what/when your mind does not like (e.g. certain topics or chapters you don’t feel a connection with but are needed, on a Friday evening you don’t feel like practicing etc.)
Peers and Networking –What does it mean: Peers are people (students) who are similarly situated as you are with respect to the end goal. Observe them, see what their habits are, what books, notes, material etc. they are using or discussing about, what their level of motivation, persistence, and failure points are, etc. “Don’t be shy, Ask how, what, where, when and why ! “Learn and incorporate those good elements in your routine and study/plan intelligently. Remember, it is your plan based on your need and requirement; it should not be a copy of others’ plans. Know what to avoid. Avoid groupism. Look for competition and cooperation. Avoid strong liking or disliking about peers.

In the last few decades, our society has shied away from teaching the values of thrift, conservation and minimalism. These have inherent values but also inculcate other skills such as creativity, engineering manipulation and out-of-the-box thinking. Here is a ditty to remind us about these ideas:
Use it up
Wear it out
Make it do
Do without.
